Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

I have two L class running 11.00.

A strange problem has occured on both boxes without any network changes being made.

The machines accept the logon but it akes around 30 secs to display the logon.

Both machines are the same even if the FQDN's/ip addreses are used or host files etc on the client.

Strangely the issue doesn't occure from my machine !!

All other machines are OK.

Does anyone think it may be resource related.

May seem a dumb question but I think I have checked everything !!

Regards

Hello

Two files you need can check .
/etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf file.

Check in resolv.conf if domain name and search orders are proper, and in nsswitch.conf file check how hosts gets resolved it should be file (/etc/hosts) and if not resolved look for DNS)
Are you running DNS..??

Re: Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

Hi Kevin:

Check the network traffic. Is the systems which gives you the problem are on different network/subnet ? what about using telnet, rlogin etc ? Is ping works well ?

Re: Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

Hi Kevin

Looks like there should be issues with how the server names are resolved. Do a nslookup on both the servers and see how it is resolved , is in case there is an problem with the name getting resolve.

Re: Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

As Uday and Manoj says check name resolv. If that is ok then try running top may be one of the process is runaway or using all cpu time.

Re: Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

do netstat -s and check for errors; also check lanadmin--do lan, then display.

Re: Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

Hi Kevin,

Apart from the /etc/resolv.conf files and other network related files, here is something which you can also check.

Have you got NIS setup on these servers ?

I used to get this delay for getting the logon prompt, when one of our developers had assigned a some fake domainname onto the servers.

# domainname

So when the domainname is defined ( Remember this is a NIS domain and nothing to do with the DNS ), the server tries to search for the NIS server and then give you a login prompt.

Re: Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

Hi,

We had a similar problem, and it turned out to be a problem with autonegotiate between the switch and the network card. We turned autoneg off and all was well.
Because ths server was multi-homed, most FTP connections worked fine, because they hit a different nic. But if your path chose the nic in question, the FTP would just barely run.

Good luck.

Re: Slow FTP all of a sudden ?

A few things you can do to narrow it down
1 ping tests & look at the timings, traceroute also
2 ftp a 1MB file from & to the machines. If there are speed differences then it could be a busy segment or duff cable.
3 is there a difference in doing netstat -a and netstat -an. If 'an' is quicker it may be a DNS/NIS/NIS+ IP-host resolution problem.

good luck

Tim
