Slow ftp transfer

Hi boys and girls,

My FTP is working so slowly.
What could be the problem.
Connection & login are OK.
The mashine CPU is idle.
"#top" is OK.
"lanadmin" show me no down lan-interfaces and no error packages.
Any idea?

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi,

First thing I would check is the speed of the interface. If you are using 100 base network, try setting the speed to 100 Full Duplex on both the interface on the system and the port on the switch. You can use "lanadmin -x ppa#" to determine the speed and "lanadmin -X 100FD ppa#" to set the speed. To retain the speed settings, you will need to configure your /etc/rc.config.d/hpconf file.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi,

How about the duplex speed settings of you lan ? Attached a small scipt called lanspeed.

Hope this helps,

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi,
Even though your system is free and not loaded your network definitely must be Overloaded with the network traffic. Try checking your network now.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

OK, boys :)
Thanx for responces. But how I can check
the settings of switch port from the system?

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi,

From the system you cannot. If you turn-on autonegotiation on the card, it will try to match the speed of the switch port but it's not guaranteed. You will need to logon to the switch and look at the port. If you do not manage the network, then check with your network administrators.

BTW, what did your "lanadmin -x ppa#" say?.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

for system 1:
#lanscan
Hardware Station Crd Hdw Net-Interface NM MAC HP-DLPI DLPI
Path Address In# State NamePPA ID Type Support Mjr#
0/0/0/0 0x00306E274B6E 0 UP lan0 snap0 1 ETHER Yes 119

#lanadmin -x ppa 0
Current Speed = 100 Full-Duplex Auto-Negotiation-ON

for system2:

#lanadmin -x speed 1
Speed = 1000 Full-Duplex.
Autonegotiation = On.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi!

I suggest that you, or the network administrator, check the ports in the switch. They should also be set to Auto-Negotiation ON.

You also could try to lower MTU. The packets might be to big.

make sure that patches are up-to-date. I had a simililar porblem that went away when I updated patches.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

hi,
Try with manual Full-duplex 100 from the server side as many times HP-UX does not support Auto Negotiation though it shows it is on.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi,

Check system2 for type of Gigbit card:
ioscan -kfClan

If its an "igelan", then pick up the latest patch for either from ITRC to fix a possible TCP checksum problem. If you go to system1 do this:
# netstat -sp tcp|grep -i check
0 segments discarded for bad checksum

If you have more than 10 of these you probably have encountered the checksum issue.

Hope that helps,

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi,

I had similar problem in the past.
I think that it is not possible to know switch settings from HP-UX. Anyway a thought could be to launch a nettl trace (man nettl). Maybe it can help you.
Again, just a thought...

Otherwise contact your Network Administrator to know settings of switches.

HTH.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Hi,

My guess is that your system is either RP7400/RP54xx or an N-class/L-class looking at the hardware path. 0/0/0/0 is most probably the lan port on the core I/O on these servers which wouldn't be a gigabit lan.

However, you can verify it with ioscan -fnC lan command as previously mentioned.

Though your interface state shows it as "100 Full Duplex AUTO ON", I would check on the switch port to see what speed it is at. Try with AUTO_OFF by hardcoding the switch port to 100 Full AUTO_OFF and "lanadmin -X 100FD 0" on the system side to see if you gain any performance.

Having reasonably latest patches is always a good idea.

Re: Slow ftp transfer

Soundslike you've already checked lanadmin and found those stats to be clean. You should also check netstat -p tcp statistics and make sure there are no TCP retransmissions there.

Also, since this is FTP, you might want to try a test that does not have a filesystem component (especially if any of the FS are NFS :) so you might try a netperf TCP_STREAM test.

Finally, how "far" are the FTP transfers going? Are the local or remote? If remote, you may need a larger TCP window.
