Slow server

Slow server

I got a server that I periodically get complaints about being slow. What should I be looking for? While using Glance I do notice that the percentage of memory being used is close to 90%. This system is used routinely for the same work throughout the year, but periodically just seems to slow down. Any help?

Re: Slow server

Memory usage is one thing to check.

Some others are:

CPU Utilization - are there any jobs that are running with a high cpu usage and how much of your CPU(s) are being used.

Disk Usage: Is there any contention for disk I/O.

Network usage - Is there any network bottleneck that would keep users from getting responses.

Swap space usage - Are you running low on swap.

Re: Slow server

Hi John

When was your last reboot?
Are dirs over 90% full?
Do dirs have large number of files?
The reason may be based on more that one item,

The list goes on and on as to why a system slows down.
Run the attached prog it will monitor system for 10 hours (I normally start it at 08:00hrs)

Then /usr/sbin/sar -ubdcwq to read the collected data.

Look for things like disk utilisation and high waits.
