Slow Sybase backups
We are running Sybase release 12.0 using HP/UX 11.0 using EMC raid disk. The backups (i.e. "dump database") slowdown greatly at the end of the backup.
We have a Sybase database allocated at 200 gig and reserved space is currently 15 gig and am getting throughput of 15 gig/hour on the backup.
Is there a facility in HP/UX where I select the PID of the Backup Server to see what commands are being run when the backups slowdown? I believe in Sun Solaris the utility is called "truss".
I have tried adding additional shared memory to the Backup Server to improve backup performance. I backed it out as it had not effect on the backup run times.
Any suggestions would be welcomed to improve backup performance.
An interesting note is that backup runtimes have remained constant even with addition of more data over time (db allocations have remained the same). It takes just as long to backup 5 gig a few months ago as it does to backup 15 gig today.

Re: Slow Sybase backups
Hi,
The equivalent program is called 'tusc'. You can obtain here it from the porting centre.

Re: Slow Sybase backups
Michael - Thank you, this is the info i need!
A vendor of ours said the HP/UX trace facility was called tttrace but it didn't seem correct after reviewing the man pages.
Steve - great info - Thanks!
