Smart Array 6400 card replacement

We have a Smart Array 6402 (A9890A) in a rx7620 that has a bad cache battery. I suspect HP will just replace the battery. But I was curious what would happen if the entire card was replaced. How does the new card get it's drive configurations? Is the config stored on the card, stored somewhere in unix, or does the new card read all the meta data off the drives and build a new config?

Just curious what kind of disaster recovery is available for this RAID controller.

"How does the new card get it's drive configurations?"

From the drives!

Hope this helps!

Re: Smart Array 6400 card replacement

Hi Mark

Firstly it might be an idea to check the firmware levels on your 6402 as there have been cases where the cache batteries haven't been recharging properly which have been fixed with new firmware.

Usually HP will just replace the battery on the unit.

The controller does rebuild the config from the metadata on the disks. So the warning is never fail a disk and a controller at the same time, otherwise things can get messy.
