So many ypserv processes

Dear all,
i am using HPUX 11.31 on itanium and running NIS on 2 nodes.
node #1 master
node #2 slave.
these servers are just in production in 3 weeks.
the first week was fine, the second week, i start to see lot of ypserv processes at one time, it went upto 230 processes
for normal system it should only be one process.
root 25668 1 0 11:57:25 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/netsvc/yp/ypserv

The pinging was fine, telnet or ssh prompt came back righ away but when you type in login name and password, then it took a long time to connect if the system had many ypserv processes running.

the version of our ONC is
ONCplus B.11.31.02 ONC+ 2.3
and the latest version id B.11.31.05
HP support advises us to upgrade and we will on the weekend,

Just wonder if anyone has problem with ypserv on HPUX 11.31 like this before.
Please give me some advices.
Thanks in advance!
Tom

Re: So many ypserv processes

Shalom,

This is an indication that ypserv requests are not being served in a timely fashion.

Possible trouble areas:
* to many clients pointed at one master server, recommend spreading the load among several slave servers.
* software patching issue. Recommend the latest bi-annual patch update followed by ypserv specific patches if the problem does not go away.

Re: So many ypserv processes

Hi Tom,

That's a new one for me. I haven't heard of it so I'll be surprised if just updating to the latest ONCplus bundle will fix it (other than rebooting the systems as part of the install). Since I've never seen this, I'll just throw out a bunch of questions to gather information.

Which NIS server are the daemons running on - the primary? The secondary? Both? Do the daemons eventually go away on their own or do you have to terminate them to get rid of them?

Do you have any idea when these ypserv daemons are launched? Can you tell with the ps command how long they've been running? Are you seeing multiple ypserv daemons getting started at the same time? Do you have any cron jobs running that force ypxfr map pushes? Are you certain the NIS maps only list two NIS servers in the domain (you can unwind the maps with makedbm -u and verify the contents)?

Regards,

Dave

Re: So many ypserv processes

Thanks Dave,
now the system seems like normal, i did not do any thing only stop and restart the nis.server

Which NIS server are the daemons running on -->it is running on the master
Do the daemons eventually go away on their own or do you have to kill them to get rid of them?
-->before it went out by itself. but 2 days ago when i used ps command to check and count the ypserv, the processes kept going up to 230 processes and continue. while hp engineer on the line, we decided to stop ypserv
/sbin/init.d/nis.server stop and restarted the problem went away. i have not seen it happens again since then.

Do you have any idea when these ypserv daemons are launched?
-->i do not know.
Can you tell with the ps command how long they've been running? -->the processes must spent at least 10 mins on the system.
Are you seeing multiple ypserv daemons getting started at the same time?
--->this one i do not know

Do you have any cron jobs running that force ypxfr map pushes?
--->no i do not

Re: So many ypserv processes

Hi Tom,

Well, since this problem is not reproducible at the moment I don't have any suggestions for you. If the problem comes back - especially after updating to ONCplus B.11.31.05 - then we can look at ways to troubleshoot the problem.

Dave
