Some users can access server, some cannot

After some of our network backbone was replaced, some users could not access one particular HP-UX 11.0 server. Other users on the same subnet had no trouble accessing it and yet the problem users could access other HP-UX servers on the same hub. We had to reboot the server in order to sort it out.
It's a strange one I know, but does anyone have any idea where I could start looking for an explanation for this. Thanks, Michael.

Re: Some users can access server, some cannot

Well, if these users had access to the servers before, than more than likely (unless some files like inetd.sec have been changed) it is network related. It is very possible when they replaced some 'backbone' the router tables were affected. This is not uncommon on certain routers/hubs/switches. Possibly when you rebooted your server the router than could recognize it again, thus enabling it's ability to 'route' data.
Might be helpful, when backbone networking is done, it is good to have your tables rechecked and do some kind of snmpwalk of your system(s) to ensure everything is being seen properly.

I'm not a "networking person"...just a thought,

Hi Michael,

You have rebooted the server so the arp cache would be rebuilt, but i have seen similar problems due to incorrect arp entries. From what you have said, that definitely seems a possibility.

Just a thought.
