Something to think about...

Something to think about...

Hello,

Last Friday I've asked this question regarding the mini-GBIC problem in the networking forum:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xcd57b10230dcd61190050090279cd0f9,00.html

As you can see, I didn't get a single reply, in 3 days.

I put the same question on this forum (HP-UX)... after 15 minutes, 2 replies. Dan or whoever he is, rightly moved the same question back to the networking forum...

Guys, you are highly competant... otherwise I wouldn't have aksed the question. Please, just don't remain solely on the HP-UX forum, visit the other forums as well... you know more than you think :-)

Also, worth mentioning... some users finally have points from the networking forum, this after some 10 or so questions... or at least, the points should move accordingly very soon...

Good day,
Vince

Re: Something to think about...

Vince,

I think a lot of people ask their questions here, regardless of the subject, for just that reason. If they categorized properly, they wouldn't get an answer. If they post here, they get several good answers before the question gets moved.

All guys must read the all forums give the answer only in correct forum!!!

Re: Something to think about...

I don't look at the category. I look at the subject.

I read in http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/FamilyHome/0,,117!1!1,00.html so I see *all* categories. Most beginners post in "databases" anyway :)

Re: Something to think about...

Procura,

I'm referring to the networking forum (the new one), not the networking sub-forum within the HP-UX forum.

Re: Something to think about...

Who on earth has enough time to monitor any other forum than HP-UX ? I dont. My boss complains already at the time I spend answering questions on the HP-UX forum.

Maybe if the site was faster or there was some way to cram more questions from multiple forums onto a single screen then we could see more questions at once and then spot those we can easily reply to.

Re: Something to think about...

Ahh, OK. I agree with Stefan. No time. It's even worse. I kinda dislike my questions being moved from hp-ux to any other top-level cat. Due to me having two e-mails attached to my profile ID I do not get e-mail notifications and thus will not see any answers :(

Yes this happened once, and I used the asignment rate as an indicator that there were new answers to be read and asigned points.

So questions asked in any other forum than the hp-ux will certainly miss /my/ attention.

Re: Something to think about...

Then you should ask Dan to remove all the forums and keep just one forum, as it was originally, I beleive. The scope of making new forums within ITRC is not being reached then.

Dan please take note.

Re: Something to think about...

Guys;

I believe the point of making multiple forums is that there's too much traffic to have one, big forum.

But maybe we can have a meta-forum that shows *all* messages, much the same way that the HP-UX forum, at the base level, shows "general", "databases", etc. under it... Dan?

Re: Something to think about...

Vincent,

You've brought up a good point. I thought about this recently and I looked at how I spend my time in the forums. I realized that I was spending all of my time in the HP-UX forum. I decided to check out some of the other forums where I might be able to contribute a little bit, and now I hit those forums every so often. The volume of traffic in the other areas (Linux, servers) is not nearly as huge as it is in this forum, so I've found that with just a few quick visits each day I can pretty easily keep up with the posts there. As Vincent Fleming said, the traffic for one big forum would be prohibitive. Aside from the system management side (which I'm sure keeps quite a few people busy!), it would be hard to follow the posts with the volume of traffic you would see.

Maybe the answer is for all of us to try to hit the other forums that you can help with once in a while. This might be a good point to add to Patrick's FAQ thread.

Re: Something to think about...

Ah, exactly.

I only have so much time to spend, and it is spent more profitably in the HPUX forums.

Re: Something to think about...

I'm going to spend my time where I can glean the most information. In the past, I spent time in other forums but most of what I read there was not within my realm of knowledge, experience, or even interest.

Personally, I'd prefer any question that had anything to do with an HPUX system be posted under the HPUX forums, even if about networking, storage, or servers. But that's just me. I can also see why the categories are organized as they are.

I don't know how to do it but it seems to me that some categories could be cross-referenced to more than one area. For instance, the "hpux - networking" category could also be reachable under networking, perhaps as "networking - hpux".

Re: Something to think about...

One metaforum is OK, as long as I can `tick' which subcategories I want included.

I'm a technical guy, and I am absolutely not interested in promoting HP-UX, sales discussions, VAX-M$Win interaction, new scanner drivers, token-ring, ... (well, you get the drift)

Re: Something to think about...

Now, that's a good idea - a metaforum where you pick the subtopics of interest!

I bet that would help the gurus out there watch over anything they are expert in and anything they want to learn about, without having to see all the unwanted topics!

Re: Something to think about...

Vince,

I usually keep a window open on servers and storage - thank you mozilla (it has tabs!)! But now that they have added "proliant" servers - man talk about a million posts! I will probably never see a proliant server, so I probably will never look at or answer any (on proliant).

And I agree, that it's good to "expand" your horizons and learn something new!

I don't know why they lumped proliant servers into the servers area when they didn't combine tru64 with hp-ux. But hey, this is the company that famous for selling vaporware.
