Sound on 712/80 workstation

Hi,

Recently I installed linux on one of my workstations and apparently when shutting down the window manager xfce it generated some shutdown sound (hehe...sounded like it).
So since sound is possible from linux I wanted to know if it also is possible running HP-UX and have sound enabled.

Look into "audio" (man audio from hpux):

Audio hardware is built into all Series 700 computers except the 720, 730, and 750; you can upgrade these models to become the 725, 735, or 755, which do have audio hardware. Note, older 705s (that is, 705s with the 8MB HP-UX) do not include audio software.

Have a look at man send_sound for playing audio files

It is a 712/80 model.

Most likely is missing the audio software.

Re: Sound on 712/80 workstation

If I had linux running on it, I'd leave it that way! How easy was it to install linux on the 712, because I have a few 715's I want to convert and keep alive for a few more years?

thanks!

Re: Sound on 712/80 workstation

Well eventually it is not that difficult when you are installing from CD. It runs quite nice. Only problem is running a good window manager. Gnome and KDE are pretty slow. I use
xfce which keeps this thing running smooth.

I installed Debian on it but retrieved all the packages from the net (belnet). Only needed to create a minimum install CD to partition the disk and install the kernel and networking software.

From time to time I only perform a distribution upgrade which works quite smooth.

Worth trying out.
