/stand must be in HFS .. Why ?
I know the /stand must be created in HFS file system , However i couldn't find the reason , why are we forced to do that ?
I want to know in detail about ..
Why secondary loader ( hpux ) want kernel should reside on HFS ?
What are the benefits the hpux ( Secondary Loader ) getting from HFS rather than vxFS ?
Thanks in advance for the valuable replys..
Thanks & Regards

Re: /stand must be in HFS .. Why ?
The secondar can communicate only with HFS.
Hence it requires to be HFS.
Once the secondary loader loads the kernel from HFS then it is the kernel which understands all the other advanced filesystems.

Re: /stand must be in HFS .. Why ?
The only reason is your ISL doesn't understand the VXFS architecture and is very much designed to work with conventional HFS filesystem.
On the other hand HPUX OS i.e. its kernel has capability to cope up with the advanced structure of VXFS and thereby further can mount/unmount and comminucate with VXFS filesystems.
Hope that helps.

Re: /stand must be in HFS .. Why ?
In the beginning there was HFS. Or rather when I first took to HP-UX back in 5.X the hole disk was one file system and it was HFS. Then there was partitioning, and then LVM. Still the file systems where HFS. THEN came JFS and was more like a industry standard and due to the historical reasons the boot file system still has to be HFS. It has something to do with the boot loader knowning how to find the necessary files without going the normal way through a mounted file system.

Re: /stand must be in HFS .. Why ?
Thanks for your replys ...
Tully , The threads you forwarded are not explaining the below questions ...
What are the things hpux ( SL) expected from the filesystem which is holding the kernel ?
I hope We can create continous FS in VxFS also and more reliable than HFS .
So i really want to know what are the special attributes that HFS having than VxFS to satisfy the secondary loader .
Thanks & regards ,
Guna

Re: /stand must be in HFS .. Why ?
reason is that kernel loader on PARISC is unble to read metadata structures of JFS.
On other systems /stand usually is on JFS
HFS is now supported only for compatibility reasons, for long term strategy is JFS the standard

Re: /stand must be in HFS .. Why ?
.... there are no benefits, it is necessity.
also HFS can have max 128GB file/filesystmes, VxFS (JFS)3.5 up to 2TB file/filesystmes
