Standby LAN
I have configured a Service Guard Cluster with one package in a Hot-standby configuration (2 rx2600's). All is working fine but because of time constrainsts at the time I did not configure the standby LAN.
I have two LAN cards in each server. Lan0 is on the motherboard and I also have a 4 port lan card (lan2, lan3, lan4 & lan5 lan1 is gigabit ethernet). I have a cross-over cable between a port in each of the 4 port lan cards (lan5) as a heartbeat LAN. lan3 on both servers are connected directly into a router.
Is it possible to configure lan0 (or say lan3 on the 4 port card) as the data LAN and one of the ports on the 4 port card (lan0) as a standby lan. Or it is not possible to use the same physical card as both a heartbeat LAN and a standby LAN at the same time.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Standby LAN
Hi Furtz,
It is possible, but i would advice to use different devices for fail over so lan0 fails over to lan2 or vise versa.
If possible also use two different switches as well.
Regards,
Gideon

Re: Standby LAN
Any of the four ports on the four port lan can be configured as a standby lan.
The issue at hand is single point of failure. If the main lan port for the SG package is on the card and the standby port is on the same NIC you have a single point of failure. The last time a LAN card failed on me the whole card died.
No help in that configuration. You machine probably has a built in lan card, which you might want to reserve for Ignite boot, since Ignite can only boot off the built in lan card.
You can add a card, or have a custom script that takes that lan card down and brings it up as a standby lan.
Remember HP-UX will not tolerate to NIC cards active on the the same network. To do this you need a pay for product Auto Port Aggregation.
