Strange Virtual IP behaviour

We have 2 network sites separated by high speed WAN. Let say in site A the network is 10.32 and the site B the network is 10.132.

One HPUX in site A has a virtual IP so let say the physical IP is 10.32.10.1 and the virtual IP is 10.32.10.2.

After that HPUX system rebooted, other server from site A got no problem accessing the physical and virtual IP, but strangely from one server (say Y) on the site B, I can ping to the physical but not the virtual. If I ping from that HPUX to the server on site B, no problem.

I tried to ping the virtual from other (say Z) server on site B and no reponse for awhile then suddenly I got reponse,, then I also can ping from server Y. All without I changed any configuration.

Someone can explain this? Or what we have to do to prevent it?

Thank you,

Iwan Tamimi

Re: Strange Virtual IP behaviour

I use IP address only to eliminate name resolving problem .

Re: Strange Virtual IP behaviour

is the name to IP resolution making the delay? is the problem persists even if you try pining with IP?

Re: Strange Virtual IP behaviour

Iwan,
There is a chance that this may not be anything to do with your HPUX servers, but problems with your network. As you have 2 sites on different IP networks you are going to have routers and possibly switches physically between your servers.

By the fact that things start working correctly without changing anything makes me think you have a network device which is having problems learning about your server at site A after the reboot. For example because you have a virtual IP address, you have 2 IP address asigned to 1 MAC address which may confuse some less inteligent devices.
