Suggestions for new Integrity server

I am looking to purchase two new Integrity servers with Itanium 2 processors. The purpose of these servers is for test, development and interoperability testing with other equipment (non-HP SAN's, tape, software,etc.).

I need the ability to run these servers as a ServiceGuard cluster. The ability to use vPars or nPars would be nice, but not if it costs too much. Performance is not a real big concern.

I would also like to run an HP supported Linux OS, and Windows 2003 occasionally. I'm thinking one method would be to have multiple hot-swap drives, each with a different OS boot image.

I am wondering if the rx1620 meets these needs. At what server model does nPars and/or vPars become available?

Any suggestions on a platform that meets these needs are very much welcome!

Re: Suggestions for new Integrity server

The rx1620 will definitely not support nPars. I think it should support vPars though, but I'm not certain.

I don't think you will get nPar abaility until you get into the cell based systems, which start at the rx7620 with 2 cell boards.

Other than the cell-based issue, the rx1620 should be sufficient for your requirements. You can use MC/SG with them and it will run all 3 OS's.

Re: Suggestions for new Integrity server

Hi Scott,

nPars only runs on cell-based systems which means rx7620, rx8620 or superdome (therefore expensive)

vPars not available at all on Integrity until end of Q2 this year. Even then it will be on the same system as nPars only.

As for rx1620 - thats certainly the cheapest you can go - remember that if you want to run serviceguard its going to be difficult to get enough FC/LAN ports in the 2 PCI slots available to have a truly 'representative environment'. As to running Linux/Windows on it, the problem is that more often than not a PCI card that works in HPUX, doesn't work in Windows or vice-versa (e.g. A6795A is FC card for HPUX, but doesn't work with Windows).

Re: Suggestions for new Integrity server

Hi ,

NPAR is not meaningful if you dont have more than one cell board in the system.
eg:- in rp7420 there are 2 cell boards.

VPAR is not supported on rx-series( integrity series servers as of now. It is yet to introduce. You need to wait for the same.Again rp7420 supports vpar.

Supported systems at present are:-
â ¢ rp5470 (formerly L3000)
â ¢ rp7400 (formerly N4000)
â ¢ SuperDome
â ¢ rp8400 (Keystone)
â ¢ rp7410 (Matterhorn)
â ¢ L1000 and L2000 are not supported with vPars

You wont be able to run Windows Operating system in rp series.

Basically both VPAR and Windows support is not available as per the current scenerio.

Also doubtful about the windows support for VPARS.

rp7420 is very costly compared to the rx system which you were planning.

If the project is not in an urgent basis you can wait for a few months.Or contact the nearest HP office to get the expect release date of VPARs for integrity server
