Sun equivalent to make recovery?

Does anyone know of an equivalent to make_recovery for Solaris boxes?

TIA,

Sean

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

As far as I know Solaris does not have such a utility. Take a look at the command comparison chart for different OS flavor (search for "make_recovery").

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

Sun has something not only similar, but very competative to Ignite-UX in Jumpstart. This suite of utilities includes an imaging system, and like ignite requires a jumpstart server.

Actually, jumpstart came out years before Ignite.

Look for jumpstart and loads of info on Sun Microsystems web site.

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

Shannon nailed it. JumpStart, and like ignite it has the ability to be used to "ignite" (jumpstart) other servers. if only I could convince others to use it.

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

I was actually involved in light ways with some of the first Jumpstart testing.

I wont tell you how long ago it was, but as a hit it's when GM went from mainframe CAD/CAM to workstation CAD/CAM. Jumpstart was out in Solaris 2.5 and beta tests I'm pretty sure were run in all Solaris 2.4.

Ignite did not come out untill a few years later, post 10.20.

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

I've just recently heard about Solaris Flash archives. Sounds similar to Ignite.

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

The docs I saw show using a Jumpstart server and bootable CD. Can this also create a bootable tape?

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

For those of you that are have are or expecting to have sun servers I advise you taking SUN's one week class for experienced admins. Don't take admin I or admin II, take the the FastTrack program

It's $7,000 US, but it's worth it. That includes hotel and accommodations, breakfast, lunch, two (2) dinners, and snacks throughout the day.

Re: Sun equivalent to make recovery?

Hi,
Jumpstart can not be used to create tapes, it is a LAN boot utility. The normal way to backup Solaris machines is to use ufsdump to a tape. This tape is not bootable, you have to boot on a CD.
