Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

Hello Geoff,

In addition, I'd like enhancements in the spooler. Some utilities I think are very important come with comercial versions.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

All the standard stuff as already mentioned - dynamic kernels, increased limits for commands etc.

Plus - how about an undelete command, and largefiles enabled on filesystems as a default? Better auditing facilities for failed login attempts, and an ability to lock ID's so that they can only be used during certain hours. An improved (free) menu system would be nice - TSM is OK, but it's old now, and starting to look tired.

Of course, there's one big industry standard that's missing. The one thing that all us Unix types love and can't live without - HP-UX needs to be configured to have a Blue Screen of Death.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

Hi,
Thanks for opening this thread, I was planning to do so....

In addition to everyone else's suggestions:

1) Support for USB devices specially on workstations (B2000,C3600..) such as scanners flash disks???
2) Gnome Desktop included with the installation but not necessarily the default choice
3) Make_recovery to CD-R for small workstations without a tape drive or more preferably to DVD-RAM which leads me to 4).

4) When will see support for DVD-RAMs ? Drives and drivers?
5) Online JFS but free???
6) support for ext3 and NTFS file systems.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

Geoff, thanks for the thread.

Most of them are already said. Eventhough its redundant I will also list mine.

1. Want most of the kernel parameters to be dynamic to avoid downtimes and changes on the fly.
2. I want a truly improved ksh on the lines of bash shell.
3. Utility to create the scripts in runlevel configurations instead of manually creating and editing those files. Please correct me if there is anything like that.
4. Rotating logs. Linear logs are hard to maintain.
5. bundled ssh with the OS.

And,

Improved man pages. I should be able to navigate back and forth in a man page.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

Geoff,

First off: check your lvol3 to see if it isn't used for swap.

Then: I don't really have anything much to add. I'd like to see dynamic kernel, dynamic patching, more flexibility in LVM and some sort of online JFS included, but I'd want that online JFS to be a damn sight more functional than the current.

I'd like to see some tools to gauge the effect of different buffer cache sizes.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

I would like to see a better LVM manager. Make it have a nice GUI that you can right click and create a new volume group and then drag and drop physical disks into it.

I would also like to see the terminal improved. By this I mean I'd like to see color just like linux.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

Give the OS away
Include MirrorDisk
[HP make a very good living on the support upgrades anyway]

***
Side issue...Hope it's OK to mention it here Geoff

Maybe HP could do more to help trainee SysAdmins practice their skills

e.g.
I've noticed the odd post where people are looking to buy old boxes to play with in their own time

So...
Maybe HP could set up a site which emulates any number of typical environments
Including all the common applications

log on
Choose a password
Set up your preferred system with Oracle, Progress, Agresso etc
Have a play
log off
Next time you log on you're back where you left off

A benefit to HP:
They could monitor common errors &
build in optional features to catch the problems

A benefit to software vendors:
Showcase their product

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

HP should license Citrix MetaFrame for Unix, and either sell it cheap via website or just give it away. It is too good a utiility. They could prolly license it from Citrix for a couple of million, and t'would be a real boon for users AND admins. Private labelling of the product would give it visibility that it doesn't have now, and increase its market share. In addition, it would show that HP can think "outside the box" and do things that Sun and IBM haven't (yet), rather than wait (again) for them to take technical leadership.

With the others, I'd like to see ALL kernel tuning parameters dynamic. However, the external commands such as cp, tar, mv, sum need to be recompiled to 64 bit just like the O/S itself is.

Dynamic resizing of / and /stand would be nice.

SAM needs a lot of work to catch up even with old versions of SMIT.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

1. Better Workstation support
Integrated StarOffice
Netscape at "current" revisions
Image viewers, sound support, toys for users

** With Sun's PC card, and better desktop tools for workstations, HP is down market share in my area, and not likely to grow. Aix has better tools for CDE than HP, and that says alot in itself. When workstations start to move, so do servers. People dont want to deal with 2 vendors for 1 jobspace.

2. Better Disk/Volume management all around. Smarter Vg controls, for resizing everything on the fly, including base swap, etc...

3. Dynamic Kernel, where possible. Some things still need to be hard coded for safety, but things like memory allocation params should be dynamic.

I think HP is getting better at including some of the more Popular GPL server products, I.E. wu-ftpd, but there is alot more that could be done.

Shannon

Just to repeat a few things:

Tru64 clustering (I know it's in the works)
advfs from tru64
all of the individual config scripts from tru64

Dynamic kernel. No more kernel rebuilds

Mostly said before:

HPUX on intel
Gnome desktop
Better compatability with linux (so many cool tools, so hard to compile them and make them run!)
Better performance monitoring tools built-in.
Rotating boot logs so I can find out what happened 2 reboots ago.
Latest Mozilla browser.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

Support for writeable DVD drives. If I could do an ignite backup (and restore!) from a DVD, my backup costs would drop, I'd need much less space to store my archives, and my restore time would decrease. Granted, I'd have less capacity on the DVD.

I think it would also help motivate software vendors to use DVDs instead of DLTs when they have an application that's too big to fit on a CD-ROM.

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

1. Why I must always install on a fresh installtion the GNU - Tools ???? to handle files larger than 2GB (tar; gzip ...)

2. largefile lvols are default

2. Move lvols from one VG to an other VG.

3. MirrorDisc included in HP-UX for free.

4. Dynamic Patching ( no reboot - I have had this problem on a other OS but I can't remember)

5. nevermore patches

6. Lower Price for HW =:-))

7. A penguin in the startup screen =;-)))

8. Erase the DOS-TOOLS

Re: Survey says....What would you like to see in the next version of HP-UX?

Hmm...everyone has the logical request type answers, so I am going to request the illogical dreams.

I want a server that I can put on 'auto pilot' - so I can get a break.

I want a server that will detect any potential problems you or another UNIX person might make (as root) and respond with a sexy voice saying.....'no no sweetie, you don't want to do that...' or maybe when someone over uses the -f option for things it would say '...it's not nice to force mother UNIX...'. Then maybe a little wind and lightning flashing in the computer room just to make sure they got the message. You know the full effect.

I want a small camera on every server (like at the ATM's) so whenever somebody goes into the console or MP port, it takes their picture and records date and time and everything they did........reasons for this is obvious.

I want a server where the -motd file is refreshed daily with a new joke. This should be able to refreshed with a 'simple' script and then just cron'd. Hmm..maybe I should start on this one myself.

I want a server that anytime anybody tries to crack the root password with repeated su attempts.....it not only sends me a page, it deactivates the user's regular account. So the next time they try to login...it tells them..."You have been denied access by the account you kept trying to break into.....Now you have to go and deal with your 'friendly UNIX Admin' ..... Have a Nice Day"

I want servers that come in flavors....no..not AIX,SUN or HPUX, but something more like lavender, vanilla, cinnamon, lemon. So everytime I have to work on one, I get a nice aroma therapy.........ahhhh

I want a server that can make a good cup of coffee....and always have it ready for me. This must be compatible within an MC/SG environment, because I want my coffee to be their in the event of a failover.

I needed a break.......especially since I have work tomorrow and this weekend.
Hope my trek into foolishness didn't bother too much.....at least I feel less stressed today...

Rgrds,
Rita
