They usually want previous experience of supporting servers in that sector.

Re: Survey
I can see that US/UK/Canada salaries going neck to neck ...
When we talk about specialization which area do you think is on the top??
Performance
High Availabilty
Security
Networking
Database
Version Control
Directory Services
Storage (SAN/NAS)

Re: Survey
Down here in Australia, like everywhere it depends on location, skillset & industry. Sydney generally pays best and as always so does the finance sector!
A rough guide (though Michael & others may disagree) would be:
Junior: 30K-55K
Intermediate: 55K-85K
Senior: 75K-100+K
Thats Aus $$ so we don't earn as much as UK but then the beer & coffee is cheaper!! A few years back it was great heading off to work in London & sending those pounds back here!!
As regards the specialization, well its pretty hard to say. For a UNIX SA, I'd probably go for High Availabilty (good experience with clustering sw such as ServiceGuard, Veritas etc) and SAN (EMC, XP etc).
Cheers
Con

Re: Survey
About the specialization for my opinion and also the market looks like that to get good
money you must be profesional in every issue
that you wrote!
But for today the dominantic is DRP & Storage
also security.

Re: Survey
Out here in Sunny California:
Junior: 35K-50K (US Dollars)
Intermediate: 51K-90K (US Dollars)
Senior: 91K-150+K (US Dollars)
This sounds great, however, the cost of living out here is really high. In some places it costs over $400,000.00 (US Dollars) to buy a run down 1-2 bedroom home.
(I saw a job posted for a Sr. Admin @ 250K, to run a team of Jr's) It was global and required a TON of travel. These jobs sound great at first, but most people burn out really quickly.

Great to have u here back :-) ... hope u enjoyed nicely ..
That seems to be a good link ... but google search let me to a better link :-)) .. though it is little (as little as lil) IBM specific they have explained the general terminologies and SAN concepts very nicely.

You can see the link on the right hand corner for downloading the PDF.

Re: Survey
There are a lot of dumb rules
One of them is "licensing hours"
My local can SELL alcohol up until 2300hrs
Then you have a legal amount of "drinking up time" [it varies, but 20 minutes here]
A "lock in", "shut in" or "after hours" is where the licensee invites people to stay on afterwards
No law is broken if the alcohol is not SOLD
There are other gambits to get around the law
It is the NANNY STATE
They think that they have a right to infringe on personal privacy & freedom

Re: Survey
That's cool! Around here, you get 20 minutes or so after last call to finish up and then they throw you out into the street - period (though I do believe there's an underground "lockin" policy).

Posts off the topic are definitely OK once in a while ... because I don't want this thread to become a boring one :-) ...
But when it becomes too frequent then Dan will have a reason to chop this thread off ...
Thanks for understanding.
