swap utilisation problem

Hi all,

i have some problem in the swap utilisation output. please find the below output

# swapinfo -mt
Mb Mb Mb PCT START/ Mb
TYPE AVAIL USED FREE USED LIMIT RESERVE PRI NAME
dev 4096 0 4096 0% 0 - 1 /dev/vg00/lvol2
dev 5000 0 5000 0% 0 - 1 /dev/vg00/lvol10
dev 3000 0 3000 0% 0 - 1 /dev/vg00/lvswap
reserve - 12034 -12034
total 12096 12034 62 99% - 0

in this its showing the total utilisation is 99% but the percentage used in dev swaps are 0. why its taking like this.

thanks

Re: swap utilisation problem

You have reserved the space but haven't used it yet.
You will have to add more swap if you want to run more applications.

You also should configure the kernel parm swapmem_on so you can use pseudo-swap.

Re: swap utilisation problem

Hi,
The above doc explains well about swap. You seems to have memory issues. As said above, you are not using pseudoswap.

You have 16GB memory and what is the OS version.

Just give the output of
kctune|grep dbc
and
glance -m footer

Re: swap utilisation problem

Pseudo-swap is either free or pseudo-allocated , it is never reserved.

If there is an insufficient amount of available memory to fork you will receive an error : cannot fork, not enough virtual memory.

If this error is received , you will need to allocate more device swap. This should be configured on a disk with no other swap partitions, and ideally of the same size and priority of existing swap logical volumes to enable interleaving.

Re: swap utilisation problem

we're not using pseudo-swap.

This is your problem. You should use it.
You still may need more device swap.
