During Hpux 10.20 software load, I received an error caused by a tape read problem. A menu will appear asking if I want to try to resume the software load using interactive or non-interactive mode. After using a cleaning tape on the drive, I select retry using non-interactive mode. The load resumes where it left off and the remainder of the filesets load but upon reboot, I receive an error about my inittab file. Has anyone seen this problem before because I am forced to reload the software from the beginning and it is a long load.

I am sorry but forgot to write down the error. It has something to do with the inittab file. When I look at the file, the size is zero. I will try to recreate the problem and write down exactly what happens.

If your /etc/inittab file is 0 bytes, then you have a problem. I wonder if the inittab didn't get restored? Do you have another backup that you can restore the inittab file from?

Here is an ll of an inittab from my 10.20 system:
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 1595 Feb 12 2000 /etc/inittab

and an 11i system:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 1509 May 1 17:31 /etc/inittab

I do have a backup I can restore. I guess what I am really asking is why does the hpux install program give you the option to recover from a tape fault but then fails to create the inittab file.

Ken,

Were you reloading from an Ignite/UX backup tape? If the tape errored and it happened to be at the point in the tape where the inittab file is, then it is possible that there is a problem at that spot on the tape and the entire file could not be restored.

Something to try is to see if you can read the inittab file off of that tape. If it comes back as 0 bytes, or errors on you then there is a problem on the tape.
