Look for unsuccessfull login attempts (btmp/wtmp)
Check mail queues and mail.log
Check health of all network/san interfaces

My primary role is to read my email.
I use cron to perform all manner of systems checks to insure me that all things I must monitor are in good shape.
The EVA system itself is managed by a DL-380 Windows box that can be configured to keep track of storage issue from the standpoint of capacity utilization.
Your standard file system check on the sysadmin side will enable you to make sure you don't run out of space there.
cron is your friend, your trusted assistant to watch things that are too boring to watch.
