Syslog

I have an N class server and discovered that syslog.log has not been updated in 6 months. Can you tell me why syslog is not logging? The server has been up for 216 days.

Re: Syslog

Look for syslogd ... sometimes it hangs...if so restart the syslogd

maybe have a look at the syslog.conf

Re: Syslog

Is your syslogd daemon running? ps -ef|grep syslogd.

Restart it with /sbin/init.d/syslogd start

Re: Syslog

It is possible that the syslog daemon (syslogd) has died or has been disabled. The very first thing to do is a "ps -ef | grep syslogd" to see if the daemon is running. If not, restart it. If it dies again, you may want to add the -d (debug) option. You might also have a missing or corrupt /etc/syslog.conf file.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Syslog

Hi Leoanrdo,

Are the permissions OK on /var/adm/syslog?

Re: Syslog

Apart from what have been mentioned, another possiblility is that someone might have (at some point) deleted the syslog.log file, recreate a fresh "zero" size syslog.log or edit the syslog.log BUT without restarting syslogd daemon. At that point it'll stop logging.
