syslogd, Network is unreachable

syslog.conf on unix box is setup to also send info to another server. Recently this stopped and syslogd is running. I sent a hangup signal to re-read config file, then it starts sending syslog info to other server. When I reset system get message:
Jan 16 10:23:09 uspfodpc syslogd: restart
Jan 16 10:23:09 uspfodpc syslogd: sendto: Network is unreachable.

I can telnet to other servers and also telnet into this box from other servers. Any suggestions? Am sure it's something simple but my mind is about blank on what to look for. Thanks a bunch, Julie

Re: syslogd, Network is unreachable

Hi Julie,

Can you ping, traceroute or telnet to that syslog server from *this*server?

Check your route tables
netstat -rvn
If there was a static route to this server it may have a problem - but the above exercises should point it out.

Rgds,
Jeff

Re: syslogd, Network is unreachable

I believe that what you are seeing is syslog is starting up before the network is up. That is why when you test it it works ok. Double check the order in which syslog starts opposed to the network in /sbin/rc2.d/Sxxxsyslog etc.
If it has wheels or a skirt, you can't afford it.
