System Backup Guideline

Dear Experts,

Would any body pls brief :

1) The differences between make_net_recovery, Golden Image and DRD Clone.

2) Which one of the above is preferred and why (HP UX ver-11.31)?
Note: I want the system backup in SAN LUN.

3) Suppose I am having 146 GB system Disk & the occupancy is 100Gb , what should be the LUN size, 100Gb /146Gb/or what?

I do take system backup in DAT but all you are off the reliability of the Tape hence I want the backup in the disk.

Regards...

Re: System Backup Guideline

Ignite saves the system configuration and the contents of VG00 to an archive on tape or disk (on the ignite server); DRD is cloning the VG00 to another disk.
Both methods are OK; DRD is faster when doing restore, because you only need to boot the clone.

If you want to have multiple backups, you just need more space when using ignite server, another tape when backup to tape or another disk when doing DRD.

Golden images are for system cloning, not really for backup.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: System Backup Guideline

1) The differences between make_net_recovery, Golden Image and DRD Clone.

a. Make_net_recovery, taking bootable vg00 image to an Ignite server. In case of boot disk failure you may reimage the client from server with a network boot. Multiple backup can be taken. Need network bandwidth.

b. Golden Image is used to install manyservers with similar configuration OS and HW. So that time and administration work can be reduced. Not for system backup/recovery purpose.

c.DRD => image taken to disk, can be modify the taken image live. mainly used while doing SD operations. Still can be used as a backup and recover solution. Costly as disk is involved.

11.23 onwards DRD is available. DRD is fast but costly.

I want the system backup in SAN LUN.==> if your system is configured for SAN boot you can go for DRD.

3) Suppose I am having 146 GB system Disk & the occupancy is 100Gb , what should be the LUN size, 100Gb /146Gb/or what?

create 146 GB, DRD will create all the filesystems with similar size.

Re: System Backup Guideline

Thanks to Mr Torsten and Mr Sooraj Cleris for your reply.

Mr Sooraj you have said " if your system is configured for SAN boot you can go for DRD.".

In this regards I have few quarries:

1) My purpose is that, if system crash happens I want to recover from backup. Here we have vPars, any 1 vPar is down how should recover from DRD clone disk?
You have said " if your system is configured for SAN boot you can go for DRD." - Would you pls clarify?

2) You said "DRD is fast but costly." --Is not it a free SW?

3) Here we have total 8 vPars connected to a 6TB SAN. Now if we allot 8*146 GB + XGB (for RAID) it will consume so much space.

So what is the better alternative?

PLS REMEMBER I WANT TO KEEP THE BACKUP IN SAN LUNS ONLY.

You need a dedicated disk for each clone.

Hope this helps!
