System can not boot (L3000 + HP-UX11.00)

Hi,

I have L3000 server with HP-UX11.0.
Problem is that system never bootup with following error:

"Exec failed:can not find /stand/vmunix or..."

What I have done:

1. Restored root disk data from ignite ->OK
2. Set mirror root disks -> Not enough commands..
3. After 1 month when I reboot the system, system never bootup with above message.
4. Check if file system is ok or not. ->OK
I can see /stand/vmunix using other server

Does anyone have same problem or any idea?

Thank you for the advance.

Re: System can not boot (L3000 + HP-UX11.00)

Hi Joseph.

Thanks for your advise.

It's very interesting for me.
Because I am having 2 L3000 servers with same configuration and done recovery with same idea.

Strange thing is that one of them could bootup but other could not.

And also my question is that ignite recovery never done "mkboot" and "mkboot -a"...?

Any idea?

Re: System can not boot (L3000 + HP-UX11.00)

Hi Norio,

Good day to you !

You can see /stand/vmunix, how this can happened when the system never bootup ?

You can try to boot to single user first and boot the system using vmunix.prev. Check the url below (docID : KBAN00000233) about 'How to Recover the Kernel for HPUX' :

http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000080361016

If this one doesnt work, you need to restore root disk data from Ignite again.

For mirroring the boot disk, you can check the url below (docID : LVMKBRC00005103) about 'How to create a Mirrored Boot Disk on PA-RISC Systems - Cookbook' :

http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000080811535

Hope this information can help you.

Cheers,

Re: System can not boot (L3000 + HP-UX11.00)

Hi Norio,

Since you mention, you done the Ignite restore for the other L-class server. I need to check below :

did you boot from the mirror disk not the primary disk ? since maybe the mirror disk not applied with 'mkboot -a'

If possible, you can try to restore the Ignite backup once again to the server that having a problem and follow the steps on the document that I refer to you.

Good luck, the force be with you.

Re: System can not boot (L3000 + HP-UX11.00)

Hi AW,

Actually this was happened 2 wks ago and now fix it. I want to know what happened at that time.

I have boot from primary disk because mirror disk never set as bootable.

First time when I met that error message.
I disconnect both primary and mirror disk from the server then connected them to other server, create temporary VG, and mount them. So that why I could check all the file system is ok.

After this check, I have done "mkboot /dev/dsk/cxtxdx" and took disks back to original server.

But result was same, could boot with hpux -lm.

After booting with "hpux -lm", checked "lvlnboot -v" and see
"Boot: lvol1 on: /dev/dsk/c0t3d0" was disappeared.

Next I have done was create mirror again, set AUTO boot to promary & mirror disk.

Then finally bootup with operation mode.

This was story.

It's very difficult to try restore again because this system is for my customer.

At the moment I am testing with my server but this never happen...

Re: System can not boot (L3000 + HP-UX11.00)

Hi Norio,

Looks like the mkboot is the solution for that. Since at the first time, you be able to boot to the primary disk but unable to boot to the mirror disk due to the error message.

Ignite/UX does not currently have any built-in support for mirrored disks, based on the url below (docID : KBRC00012813) :

http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000079996771

You can use the steps on this document OR previous document that I sent to you.

Hope this information can help you.
