System hangs after swinstall auto-reboot

Hi all

We are doing SSH version upgrade on HP-UX 11.11 server remotly via putty login
we uploaded the patch required & SSH-version required for the same via swinstall
It auto-reboots the system.
But the system is not comming up now
Pl send me possible causes & solution for the same.

Re: System hangs after swinstall auto-reboot

I hope you were not connected with puTTy's ssh connection while upgrading ssh itself. :)

Additionally, only PRGND
If there is GSP/MP, you can see what happening with server, may be its at BCH, or you might need to revert it....

Re: System hangs after swinstall auto-reboot

hi rajendra,

identify if the server is really down. Perform a ping to the server IP and if possible go to server consoleis there any errors coming out.

If the ssh upgrade is broken, i dont think it will cause the system to be entirely down. You have to check at the console is there any login prompt. If it is, probably the server did reboot successfully.

You could still access telnet (if the telnet has not been disable).

For temporary access, you could enable telnet (modify /etc/inetd.conf and send a HUP signal to inetd process).

Then from there, uninstall SSH and install it back. Once, ssh is OK, you could disable the telnet.

And next time, if you intend to upgrade ssh, try not to do from a ssh session.

Rgds

Re: System hangs after swinstall auto-reboot

Hi Rajendra,

sometimes, it might be possible, that the autoboot-flag is not set. So the server waits "forever" for your input at the "ISL" prompt.

You should connect to the console to check this.
If the server waits there for you to choose an boot-option: just chose "PRI"mary path
If the server prompts
ISL>
at the console pormpt just type in:
ISL> hpux
If the server comes up correctly, anything is fine.

Then enable autoboot feature again (if required):
# setboot -b on

Re: System hangs after swinstall auto-reboot

Need to to expand on your statement.
>>"But the system is not comming up now "

What is the system doing ?, what does the console say ?, is it really trying to boot ? Do you need a flashlight to find the console ?

SSH updates to not require system reboots, the patch you loosely mentioned just might.

Re: System hangs after swinstall auto-reboot

It is a unlikely event that the system will not comeup after ssh installation. login to console and check where it is stopping. may be telnet is working. One thing check the rc.log and see seather ssh has started or not. if not start manually.

Re: System hangs after swinstall auto-reboot

I've seen the same problem when just rebooting a system. The MP gets hung and I had to login to the MP again,
cm>
xd MP Diagnostics and Reboot menu
3. Soft Reset the Master MP

The the system continues to boot.
I thought it needed a firmware update but that does not appear the help.

We have only ssh access turned on.
The MP hangs often if not actively using the connection.

Desaster recovery? Right !
