System hangs on shutdown

I have a 9000/C110 with HP-UX 11.00. When I do a shutdown -h it gets to the point where it puts 8 yellow rectabgles on the screen and then hangs. Switching the power off then on lets it boot, but I never get a chace to boot from another device. I only get control when CDE comes up. Shutdown to maintenance level also won't give me control - it just hangs. Help, Please!

Re: System hangs on shutdown

Andries,

Does your C110 have one of those annoying, power-save monitors. If so, it will go into power save mode and remain dark until long after your chance to interrupt the boot process. I simply hit the esc key repeatedly (like at one second intervals) until it finally responds.

Re: System hangs on shutdown

This will not fix your problem, but "setboot" will allow you to select another boot device.

Re: System hangs on shutdown

Hi,

Keep pressing space bar to interrupt the boot. This works on my C160.

If this fails switch off the machine by pressing the power button on the front. This will do a clean shutdown.

Connect com1 to a dumb terminal or your pc's com port and run hyperterm. I have downloaded teraterm which is a better terminal emulator.

You will then get a chracter based console which will display the boot sequence and let you interrupt the boot.

Re: System hangs on shutdown

Hi Andries,

You must try using the setboot command.

Just look into this mail where I had replied earlier for a similar type of query.

Re: System hangs on shutdown

I found the problem. There was a terminator on the SCSI plug at the back of the machine. When I removed it, the problem went away.
