System Healthcheck (SHC)

If you haven't seen this before, check it out.

System Healthcheck (SHC) is a suite of tools that assesses the health of your computing environment by identifying security, performance and configuration problems before they can impact your critical operations. These tools are used to support the SHC assessment service.

SHC assessments are executed against sets of best practice system management rules for HP-UX, Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS and Windows 2000.

features and benefits:
SHC assessment features:

A brief report (SHC Lite) outlining potential issues on your system (available locally and free)
A comprehensive report (SHC Professional & Detailed) detailing potential problems, issues, diagnostics and recommendations (available only as part of an SHC assessment service)

I would like to recommend SHC, I downloaded it about a month ago and found it very usefull and informative.

I also like that it is developed in Ireland.

Re: System Healthcheck (SHC)

Berlene,
Thanks for providing the details. I am sure this tool will be handy to have.

We have been using this particular tool on our systems (especially OpenVMS) for past couple of years atleast. This was available at that time as part of the BCS/Gold Support for our OpenVMS systems.

The reports especially on the security side are very helpful and so are the other reports generated by this tool.

Re: System Healthcheck (SHC)

The SHC product is free to download and use on any system to produce the lite version of the report. The lite report is produced locally on the tested machine, and written to an html file right on the local disc.

The user has the option of forwarding the collected data to HP for a professional report/analysis with recommended improvements to system configuration. A CS level contract includes a professional healthcheck for one system, and optionally multiple systems.

The SHC configuration utility asks for a designated HP engineer, who by prior arrangement will provide his email address. This HP engineer provides the professional report with his notes and recommendation, and if necessary can make arrangements for additional consulting for implementing those changes. To arrange for a professional report, use the contact information at http://www.hp.com/hps/perevent/valupack . There are valupacks on the site for Windows and Tru64 OS's now, and we are in the process of adding an Hpux valupack now.

The users guide is located in /opt/hpsmc/shc/doc and has the following info in the "Viewing Reports" section:

SHC Lite reports can also be viewed from the command-line. The SHC Lite reports are stored in the SHC data directory in a series of time-stamped subdirectories:

/var/opt/shc/data//shc/ on Tru64 UNIX
/var/opt/hpsmc/shc/data//shc/ on HP-UX
C:\compaq\shc\data\\shc\ on Windows
To view an SHC Lite report for a particular analysis, you should change directory to one of these subdirectories and open the shc_lite.htm file with your browser.

If you are interested, contact HP, we are ready to deliver.

Thanks Jim Keeble for this info.

Re: System Healthcheck (SHC)

From the User's Guide in the downloaded tar file:

SHC Lite report
The SHC Lite report is provided free of charge to all users of SHC whether they are HP employees, or customers. It is
intended to give customers an introduction to the capabilities of SHC and to provide
an overview of the state of their system. It does not contain any additional
sections outside of those listed in Section 4.5 SHC reports, with the exception the Sample Professional Rules section. The SHC Lite report is available locally on the system, immediately after running SHC (details of how to view it are provided in Section 4.5.2 Viewing reports)."

After downloading and installing, fill in all the "Customer Details."
Under "Service Details" tab you can enter a fictious address like "no.one@hp.com" for "Specialist Email."

Put the true serial number in at he "System Serial Number" entry. Enter "none" for "Service Agreement ID" as the user's guide suggested. The tool will fill in the "Hostname" field. For the "Transport Details" tab chose "manual". You should then able to run /opt/hpsmc/shc/bin/shc.

Re: System Healthcheck (SHC)

Hello Berlene,
This tool is a very good news for helping us to diagnose Server status !

Do you know if there is somewhere a release for HP-UX 10.20 ?

Thank's a lot.
Olivier.
They say "install windows 2k, xp or better", so i install unix !

Re: System Healthcheck (SHC)

Sorry, Olivier. Since 10.20 is no longer supported, there will not be a version for it. But I am glad you are happy with it otherwise :-)

Re: System Healthcheck (SHC)

Some questions I have been asked about SHC as follows:

1. Is it safe with no service impact to run this script in production live traffic catering systems as it will run for 24 hours continuously?
2. Will system performance suffer during its execution?
3. Any pre-check suggested before running SHC?

I work for HPE.
