System startup/ oracle internet application server question.
The behavior is that Reports server does not start up when the machine runs normal startup via the rc scripts.
If you take the machine down to run level 2 and then back to run level 3, the reports server does start. If you start the server manually, it starts correctly.
The HP X Server program, which is designed to facilitate the starting of Reports server is starting up successfully several minute before we attempt to start the reports server. I conducted experiments starting the X Server on run level 2 instead of run level 3. It had no effect, reports server did not start until there was manual intervention.
There are obvious differences between system startup and changing run levels, some of which I know, some of which I am not aware of. Since we have time on the new servers, I am looking for ideas on how to proceed and need feedback.
Differences I'm aware of at startup:
no terminal variaable(I've tried setting it)
stty not being there.
Versions:
Oracle database 8.1.7
Oracle Internet Application Server 1.0.2 Patch level 12(Kind of a service pack)
Startup is done with a user called ias, and I'm uploading the user profile at an attachement.
I will be copious with points awards, especially for a user profile that gets this done. I'm assuming the stock oracle startup script will work without modification. Perhaps not.

Re: System startup/ oracle internet application server question.
I don't know whether that may solve your problem or not, but have you applied the latest patch on Oracle? I know that we had probelm akin to the one you describe using Oracle 8.1.7, and most of these problems disappeared after installing the patchset 8.1.7.2
Of course, installing the patchsett 8.1.7.4 would be better...
Have you tried looking on Metalink (metalink.oracle.com, must own a login) if there's a common answer to your problem? If you don't have access to metalink, Oracle Technical Network (otn.oracle.com) might provide you with an answer.
Unfortunately, if this doesn't help, I can't help you furhter...
Cheers,

Re: System startup/ oracle internet application server question.
We have had problems with our reports server as well. We have been able to start/keep it up only if we have a continuous active display for it to attach. In another words, Our K460 which has a CDE terminal must always be logged in (can be locked afterward) for the reports server to run.
This is very strange to me and I don't understand the cause, but this is what we have found out regarding this.
Hope this helps
Chris

Re: System startup/ oracle internet application server question.
Here is some more information. Oracle the database starts up just fine. We are on 8.1.7.3 on our as yet undeployed L2000 systems.
xvfb utility with PHSS_23546. This allows you to start reports without an attached graphics display device.
In later patches of IAS, which includes reports server, you can't run reports or start the server without an attached graphics device or the xvfb software which HP does support to counter something said in older forum posts.
2 points for effort and helping me clarify guys, keep them coming...

Re: System startup/ oracle internet application server question.
You are probably familiar with this doc, XWINKBRC00004791
http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?printable=true&docLocale=en_US&docId=200000065774334
You stated that you had PHSS_23546. This doc, updated last month, says that PHSS_25277 is the recommended. The doc may also point out something you missed.
Hope this helps
Chris
