Tachyon XL connected to a Brocade switch

Hello,

We are in the midst of attaching our HP-UX 11.11 servers to a SAN that in the past only had Windows boxes on it. Currently, our server is attached to a Brocade FC switch via a 2GB Tachyon XL card. I have patched the FC drivers to the latest levels.

What I see on the server is that the card is reading the network topology, the driver state is online, and the WWNs are set. On the Brocade switch, our SAN admin says that he can see the WWNs from the HBA, but that the "Device Name", "WWN Company ID", and "Host vs. Target" are all unknown, and that he can't do anything until those are set. He says they should be coming from the server/card.

I am not terribly knowledgeable regarding SAN configuration, but when I had these same cards attached directly to a Hitachi SAN everything worked fine without any setup on the server end (other than insf). I have looked through the documentation and don't see anywhere I can set the things our SAN admin needs.

Is there somewhere I can set those things, or does something need to be done on the switch itself?

Any help would be most appreciated.

First of all, what type of SAN are you attaching the HP system to? Second, verify that the fiber is attached correctly. If you are using LC-LC, you shouldn't have a problem here, but if you are using any SC, verify you do not have the ends backwards.

Re: Tachyon XL connected to a Brocade switch

Hi,

this will not work for all kind of cards, because very old adapters have limited capabilities and even some of them (really old) are not able to work in a fabric.

First collect information.

# ioscan -fnCfc

This will list all cards in the server (note the device files).

# fcmsutil /dev/td0
or
# fcmsutil /dev/fcd0
(use your device files)

# fcmsutil /dev/fcd0 vpd

This will give you a lot of information, including the WWN of the card.
Your SAN admin should run something like a portshow on the switch (depends of the type of switch). This should give enough information needed, I guess.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Tachyon XL connected to a Brocade switch

Thank you for the replies.

The SAN we are trying to attach these to is an EVA 6000. I asked the SAN guys to verify that the cable is plugged in correctly on the switch end.

I have given the output of fcmsutil and fcmsutil vpd to the SAN admin, we'll see what he says. He seems to think that everything should just happen transparently, but that might just be because he is used to Windows servers...

Re: Tachyon XL connected to a Brocade switch

It looks like all we had to do was manually configure the host on the EVA and then present the disks. Everything looks fine now.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions!

"It looks like all we had to do was manually configure the host on the EVA and then present the disks. Everything looks fine now."

This must be done ALWAYS (for all OS) - make sure you select the correct host mode on the EVA (hpux).

Hope this helps!
