Take over remote console control on K class?

How to take over the control from local to remote console on K class HP9000 servers?

I can connect to the server via modem, but view only. Which key shall I use to take over the control? I have tried DR, SE, but it doesn't work.

My D class boxes have a TOC button which I never touch. I would think your K box has a similar one. You may wish to try that.

You may not wish to try that, I've been afraid to touch that button.

The specs on your server may tell you more.

Re: Take over remote console control on K class?

if you issued the 'DR' command then remote console is disabled. use ER to reenable it.

The remote console only can connect if the local console is disconnected.

I think the TOC button does an OS reset, I wouln't recommend finding out.

But the K box does not have the TOC.

Re: Take over remote console control on K class?

First, you have to turn the key on the server into the 'Service' position.

You must also have enabled remote access with the ctrl/B ER command.

When you connect via the modem, the system should respond 'Remote console connected' at which point, you have to send a 'break' sequence in order to activate the console.

Frank,

the TOC button is a small recessed button on the Core I/O board. it is right below the PS/2 ports for the keyboard and mouse.

Re: Take over remote console control on K class?

Hi,

Please don't press TOC!! This button will halt your system and create a crash dump. It's useful for times when your system is hung, not very useful for this instance.

As someone mentioned earlier you need to send a break sequence to be able to type at the remote console. Sending the break sequence depends on the software you are using to talk to your modem - ie Hyperterm, Kermit, etc. In Kermit you can type ctrl-\ then b (that's hold down the Ctrl key and press the backslash key, release them both, then press b.)

If your software doesn't have an option to do this you will need to send the command directly to your modem. For MultiTech modems AT\B3 sends a break sequence.

regards,

Darren.

Re: Take over remote console control on K class?

Well by all means push the TOC button, or turn the key to TOC or whatever, but expect your system to reboot and do a crash dump immediately.
If you are logged in via a modem, the Kclass system needs to have the key set to Service Position to enable you to have the remote console, and then you need to issue a ctl-B command, holdong the ctrl key down and then depressing the b key.
Be aware that on some terminal emulators this may not work.
