Tape drive DDS3 errors on HP-UX 10.20

Hi all
I replaced a DDS2 tape drive with DDS3 one. The tape is CLAIMED in ioscan -fnC tape, but i receive the: could not open /dev/rmt/0m message when i try to access the tape. The system contains an additional tape drive (DDS1) that is working properly. I tried all combinations of SCSI IDs and device files, i also tried the mksf and insf commands, same problem.
PS: the system is G50.
Any ideas?
Thanks for help.

hi,

check the patch database for the dds3 patches and cumulative sam patches.

there was patches you needed to install for the dds3 drives on 10.2. Also just check in sam that the all the tape drivers are installed correctly and in the in state.

when do you get the error?

fbackup/sam/tar?

Hi,

Check /dev/rmt. If you added a tape drive, it most likely will be /dev/rmt/1m, not 0m.

If any application you are running requires the drive to be 0m, remove 0m special files with rmsf and create symbolic links from 1m to 0m. I've done this on a couple of servers.

Re: Tape drive DDS3 errors on HP-UX 10.20

Hi
1. Remove device file for the tape:
#rmsf -H
Or: if there is only one tape array, you can remove every old device file:
#rm -f /dev/rmt/*
2. Recreate special file:

#insf -eC tape
Try with tar command.

Goodluck!

I would also make sure the scsi id is the same on the new drive as the old drive.

If not there can be device conflicts.
