Tape drive issue

One of our tape drive on hp-unix 10.01 gone bad, previously it was claiming /dev/rmt/2m address.

We put the new drive on the same location, in order to detect new new address, do we need to reboot the server or it will detect automatically

Run an 'ioscan -fnC tape' and see if the drive shows up as CLAIMED.

You should not need to reboot.

I'm totally sure any hardware running 10.01 is NOT hotplug.

Power off the hardware, replace the drive, check SCSI ID (if it is really SCSI ...) and power on again.

These are external drives. do we need to reboot the server as well.

Depends on the type of tape device.

If they are single-ended scsi then you should be ok...but 1 out of a million times ...


If they are fast-wide HVD then you should shutdown OS and power off.

once replaced, ioscan -fC tape as mentioned before...

You also will need most likely to move the kernel stape driver into the kernel, which it is not by default.

Also I really think you should change your forums name, its a little deceptive.
