tape drive not visible

Has anyone come across an issue where, the tape drive is visible once the system is up, but is not visible at the point of sellecting the boot path. Thus, I am unable to use the tapedrive to restore from an ignite tape. I have done this before many a time succesfully, but now for some unfathomable reason the DAT is not visible

Re: tape drive not visible

What server model? PA-RISC or Integrity? Cell-based?

It may depend on your search command.

Hope this helps!

Re: tape drive not visible

Rather than searching, have you tried specifying the path of the tape drive?

Make sure the cables are plugged in and it is properly terminated. Improper or no termination causes anomalous behavior.

Re: tape drive not visible

When you say that "you have done this many a time succesfully" does that mean on this host using this tape drive? While under firmware, the box is rather dumb so that an unexpected tape drive might not be recognized. Unexpected might mean, for example, a non-HP tape drive. After the system boots and custom drivers have been loaded, the system is then much "smarter" and would have no trouble identifying your tape drive.

As mentioned earlier, poor/missing termination can also trigger this kind of behavior. In fact, I had a very similar occurence last year that was fixed with the replacement of a terminator.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Without knowing the model of your computer (HP has dozens of very different HP-UX computers, manufactured over a 20 year period), we can only gues what you mean by "visible". Here's a guess: you have an rp8400 series or possibly an rp7420 or a SuperDome or other cell-based computer, and your tape drive is connected to a different part of the computer than the CDROM foir instance. Even if you have only one partition, the standard SEA command to find a boot path will only find a portion of the disks and tapes. Use the command: SEA ALL
