tape drive not working

Model: rx6600, OD Ver: 11.23, Tape array 5300

I am trying to take ignite backup but not able to see tape devices.
I have tape array5300 having 3 drives connected to 3 different servers on same rack. This tape array was powred off. i poered on and run ioscan on all 3 servers. On one server I am not able to see the attached drive. I found the below oputput for ioscan for tape:
redbw1 /dev/rmt > ioscan -funC tape
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
=========================================================================
tape 1 0/3/1/0.11.5.255.0.0.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP Ultrium 3-SCSI
/dev/rmt/1m /dev/rmt/1mn /dev/rmt/c21t0d0BEST /dev/rmt/c21t0d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/1mb /dev/rmt/1mnb /dev/rmt/c21t0d0BESTb /dev/rmt/c21t0d0BESTnb
tape 0 0/3/1/0.11.5.255.0.0.1 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP Ultrium 3-SCSI
/dev/rmt/0m /dev/rmt/0mn /dev/rmt/c21t0d1BEST /dev/rmt/c21t0d1BESTn
/dev/rmt/0mb /dev/rmt/0mnb /dev/rmt/c21t0d1BESTb /dev/rmt/c21t0d1BESTnb
redbw1 /dev/rmt >

These are the tape devices for tape library and I do not want to touch these. My tape is conntected to card in slot 5 having hardware address: 0/6/1/0 and 0/6/1/1. I could not see any device file in /dev/rmt for this.
In /dev/rmt directory I apart for these above tape devices there were some other device files also. I removed all those files using rmsf.
# /dev/rmt > rmsf /dev/rmt/2m /dev/rmt/2mb /dev/rmt/2mnb
# /dev/rmt > rmsf /dev/rmt/c1t2d0BEST /dev/rmt/c1t2d0BESTb /dev/rmt/c1t2d0BESTn /dev/rmt/c1t2d0BESTnb /dev/rmt/c1t2d0DDS /dev/rmt/c1t2d0DDSb

I pugged the cabel of a running drive to this system but still the ioscan is not sensing tapes.
At this point i am suspecting SCSI card failure. Please suggets me the below:
1. if i am going on right track.
2. Do I have any other option to get the tape sensed.
3. Do I have any other option to take ignite backup of the server from other system?

Re: tape drive not working

Hi gsingh,

I hope you are checked physical connections to server to tape drive.
run #ioscan -fn |grep -i no >>check any No hardware devices.
also check #insf -e

Hi Gsingh,

R u using FC and sanswiches

Re: tape drive not working

Yes I have checked cabels. This is dual port scsi card tried on both ports. No use.

for tape I am using only SCSI card. FC cards are there but only for SAN connectivity to EVA.

Re: tape drive not working

This is (presumably) an A7173A SCSI card.

Have you run through the troubleshooting section of the user guide for this card?

Re: tape drive not working

try
#ioscan
#insf

chcek in /var/opt/resmon/log/event.log for any failures.

check "dmesg".

Re: tape drive not working

Please post an "ioscan -fn" first - more to follow ...

Hope this helps!

Re: tape drive not working

No error found for tape in syslog, dmesg. insf also ran no use.

Attached is ioscan -fn output.

Re: tape drive not working

There is nothing ...

try to check cables, terminator, drive - test with a known working drive!

This should be easy with a tape array 5300.

You can also try this to get some more info:

# mptconfig /dev/mpt1

# mptconfig /dev/mpt2

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: tape drive not working

Torsten:

On another server in same rack I have taken backup in anoother tape drive. I have attached the same tape drive cable to this server, but on this serve I am not able to see the tape. That was the reason I was suspecting it could be a SCSI controller issue. Already open case with HP support.

mptconfig config liiks fine. Below is output. pasting output for one device only other is exactly same except device name.

> mptconfig /dev/mpt2

Re: tape drive not working

Why don't you first check the installed driver for the scsi:
swlist |grep -i scsi
If it's outdated, you'd better update.

Then if it's not a single Tape drive, perhaps it will need some additional software to be installed, i.e. to control the robot.

Re: tape drive not working

Forget the driver - it must be visible anyway.

If you connect the non-working drive including cable to another server - it is still not visible right?

If you connect a known working drive to the first server - is it visible?

The most common reason is a bent pin on the drive side - check this.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: tape drive not working

Drivers are fine. Same as on all other servers.

Pins also I checked, those are fine. Now one more issue has come.
For testing I had connected the working drive to the problem server. Now when I connected the drive back to working server that server is also not sensing the drive. Now on both nodes I am not able to see ay drive. I am suspecting there is some issue with the working server which has caused issue to the drives.
I am planning to call HP engineer for support.

Any suggestions?
