tape drive question

I have two HP-UX servers, an L2000 w/ HP-UX 11.0 and an rp3440 w/ HP-UX 11i.23, in my office. On the L2000 I have 5 tape drives and on the rp3440 I have one tape drive connected.

My question is simple. Is there a way for me to connect my rp3440 server to one of the tape drives that is connected to the L2000 so I can download some files to the rp3440 server?

Re: tape drive question

If the two boxes are close enough physically so as not to exceed maximum cable lengths then this configuration works:

Server A HBA (SCSI ID 7) Termination ON --> Tape Drive (SCSI ID 1) --> Tape Drive (SCSI ID 2) ..... -> Server B HBA (SCSI ID 6) Termination ON.

In this configuration, either server can access any of the drives (not simultaneously, of course).

The "gotcha" for this configuration is that no FWD/HVD SCSI devices are supported at 11.23 so if your 11.0 drives are HVD, this won't work unless you purchase an LVD/HVD bus convertor.

Plan B: Use a remote drive. Fbackup/frecover allow a remote device to be specified (e.g. -f serverB:/dev/rmt/1m).
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: tape drive question

The servers are across the room from each other and there isnâ t any chance to move them closer together.

At this point I have been writing to a DLT 8000 tape drive on the L2000 and then moving the tape to the SDLT 320 library on the rp3440 server. I was just hoping that there was a way to get the rp3440 server to talk with the tape drives on the L2000 without having to move tapes manually.

Re: tape drive question

hello,

The other thing would be to connect them via a switch.
