Telnet 2 HP-UX through Proxy
Hi,
How can I set up a telnet connection from the internet (or outside of the
firewall) to my HP-UX (10.20)through Microsoft Proxy 2.0 with SP1 (found inside
the private network)? Should it be through the SOCKS service on Proxy server?
If so how and whether the route back on HP-UX should indicate the Proxy server
as the gateway?
Any info would help.
Thanks

Re: Telnet 2 HP-UX through Proxy
Use of the SOCKS function will require a socksified TELNET application.
You should be able to open the telnet port through the use of packet filtering, but if that is not currently turned on, you'll likely break your outbound proxy services. Proceed with caution and read your documentation carefully as you may need to create outbound filters for the existing FTP and HTTP traffic that are by default allowed with the proxy server product.
Note that you'll likely need to allow all outbound ports above 1023, since once the connection in on port 23 is allowed, the systems will negotiate another port so 23 is allowed to listen for another user.
Also, it almost sounds like you have a firewall in addition to your proxy server. If that is the case, you'll need to review the policies on that system to allow telnet in.
Having said all that, remember that TELNET passes all data in clear text. So if you log on as root via the Internet, there's little to keep a sniffer from catching your system's root password.
All in all, I'd take a look at VPN options on your firewall rather than going through the proxy server directly. The VPN will encrypt your traffic as it passes across the Internet to your network.
