Telnet & lastb

Here goes our problem

Platform : HP-UX 11.11

When an user telnet to the server and the authentication fails after max tries, the lastb reports max tries + 1 attempts.

eg:

root pts/tf Sat Sep 4 10:42
root pts/tf Sat Sep 4 10:42
root pts/tf Sat Sep 4 10:42
root pts/tf Sat Sep 4 10:42

( for only three failed attempts)

Is it the correct behavior or any way to avoid this.

Thanks for the help

Michael

Re: Telnet & lastb

Hi Michael,

Check this document from ITRC database.

Document description: Some failed login(1) attempts are recorded twice (as lastb(1) shows)
Document id: 8606355118
Product name: HPUX S800 1.0-11X

---
Starting with 11.00 patch PHCO_24083 the last failed attempt is
recorded twice in /var/adm/btmp and thus lastb(1) displays it twice:

Hope this helps,
