Telnet/rlogin error HPUX 11.00

When we try to login we get
No utmp entry. You must exec "login" from the lowest level "sh". Console login is fine.

The problem stems from a host rename. One of our apps still thought the box was the old hostname doing a file grep for the old host name we found utmp, wtmp and btmp stiil had references to the old hostname even after a reboot.

We've cleared the wtmp and utmp files. Created a new /etc/utmp file as well as rebooted but still get the same rlogin error.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

How did you change the name of the server ? Using set_parms utility or just by editing configuration files ? If you did the latter, I strongly advise you to use the set_parms utility before pulling any more of your hair.

Actually did both. First time changing netconf, second time via set_parms.

Can you have a look at /usr/bin/login and see if it is seuid root? Or as a test chmod 666 /etc/utmp and login again.

Also make sure that you have the latest patch bundles for hp-ux 11.0 installed (https://payment.ecommerce.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/try.pl?productNumber=QUALITYPACK&date=).

or the individual patches for:

PHCO_33609 : libc cumulative patch
PHCO_25796 : cumulative patch for /sbin/init
PHNE_26096 : telnet kernel and telnetd(1M) patch
PHCO_19701 : tsm(1) cumulative patch
PHSS_30010 : CDE Runtime Patch
