telnet

Hello Experts,

we got a new HP server rp5470. we have configured the all the network information throught lan console.
i'm able to ping to the server.
But if i'm trying to telnet to the server from my desktop it is taking long time to get the login promt and after that if i'm giving the login and password it is displaying login incorrect. i'm sure about the passowrd. So what could be the cause. But i'm not sure about that there is any firewall or not.

Re: telnet

Check /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log in the server. Are you logging as root or normal user ?

Re: telnet

May be problem(s) as like,

i) Taking time to resolve hostname -> ip-address
ii) Routing settings. Check from windows as,

tracert
how much it is taking

iii) network cable problem
iv) Too many process running by occupying more system resource(s) like cpu and memory
v) file system usage on server

Re: telnet

To log telnet based login details then,

# inetd -l

it will log all login service log informations to syslog.log file.

i) Which OS you are using? (uname -a)
ii) # what `which telnet` paste this information.

Re: telnet

Do ftp from windows to hpux machine with the telnet failed login and passwd? Is it working?

Do you have any other service like ssh, rlogin to hpux machine then use with that account and passwd.

Post the results here.

Re: telnet

I hope your passwd is changed. Are you the system administrator or in-charge for that machine.

Are you have any root session then,

change passwd of root

or boot with single user mode and change root user account password.

It will work.

Re: telnet

Do you have any special characters in the password accidentally ?

Re: telnet

Is there any file as /etc/securetty in hp-ux machine. Login with normal user and cat the file as,

# cat /etc/securetty
console

if like this then you can not able to login as root user. Login with normal user and then use su.

Anway try another scenario as,

Login into the hpux machine with normal account and,

$ su -
give root user passwd.

Are you able to login now?

Post this results.

Re: telnet

Hello Muthukumar,
you are exactly right,
i have renamed the file securrety.
and i created the user.
i'm able to login to the new server as a user and afert that su .
will it effect if i rename the file securetty.
But still my problem hasn't solved .
all ineed to do is loggin into the server through my desktop as a root not as a user.

Re: telnet

/etc/securetty is a file used to control login based on it's tty. Root logins are using console tty. If you put the word console in /etc/securetty then, it will not allow to use root user in a direct manner.

If your machine is not allowing root login directly then ways as,

1) Remove /etc/securetty file
2) check the /etc/profile file which is scripted to control telnet login
3) check the root users $HOME/.profile file contents for the 2nd section
4) What is there in /var/adm/inetd.sec file for telnet?

Post these informations.
