Telnets freeze several seconds

I have no trouble with local telnets into my HP9000 - D380/2 server, but remote logins from the internet are having some trouble. Basically it's the thing where the terminal appears to freeze, sometimes up to 15 seconds, then when it's free all the characters typed finally catch up.

I want to blame the network connections, but I also want to know what else I can look for, or how to prove it. The users are dialing into their respective internet providers, and telnet'ing in through our 144K DSL connection.

Since they are using a text-only application I would have thought that their dial-up speed would not be a factor - the dialups are faster than any dumb terminal would comm anyway, right?

The biggest thing is that, for a long time users did not have this problem or did not complain; seems something has changed.

Any discussion on this would be welcome.

Re: Telnets freeze several seconds

to see if it is the networks,
next time it happens have them ping the server and see what response they get.. do they get high ms as well as some timeouts?

Hi,

One thing I can sugeest you to check your DNS setup how the addres is being resolved.

Look for /etc/resolve.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf.

Re: Telnets freeze several seconds

I think quite possibly your trying network resolve an issue you have no way to prove.
If your telnet sessions and network is responding as it should, then your ok.
Your outside folks are going through multiple 'doors' first the telco; then to their ISP (and who knows about their network or baud rate truly) than from there crossing the www to finally get to you...(and are they going through your firewall too..). Now they made it in, and now they have traverse back.
So how can you diagnose the majority of this network scenario, where you are only one end point of this network connection...
My suggestion...tell these folks to get cable internet, and get rid of their dial-up to an ISP.

Just my 2cents,

Re: Telnets freeze several seconds

I tend to agree. I don't have any internal issues with Telnet.
