TERM value for sam?

I have a 700/RX diskless workstation with a 98774A graphics terminal. After a weekend shutdown (something we don't often do), the whole system came back OK, but when I ran sam (something I don't do often, either), it came up in an ASCII screen mode. It used to come up in GUI. I suspect it's a TERM setting, but don't see how that could have changed. TERM is 'hpterm'.

Another symptom is that terminal windows come up with a different font that they used to before. That could be a font problem, but I don't know where to start looking. When the workstation boots, I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Re: TERM value for sam?

Kind of depends how you are running sam.

If you are in graphics mode on the workstation, I'd say hp or hpterm.

If you are running remotely on a pc using reflections or hummingbird, maybe not.

I suspect your actual issue is the DISPLAY variable.

Check what its set for and that this is a valid, working IP address on the workstation.

Re: TERM value for sam?

If you're running from the console, most likely there has been a networking change or problem. SAM always starts by looking for a DISPLAY variable (which is your local computer name or IP address followed by :0.0. This happens automatically when your system boots up. If DISPLAY is not set or invalid, SAM reverts to ASCII mode. TERM has nothing to do with the decision, it only refers to the emulation mode when you run a terminal window such as hpterm, xterm, etc.

Because this is a diskless X/window terminal, troubleshooting will be tricky. If CDE comes up (I am assuming CDE and not the old VUE or plain old mwm/Motif) then look at your environment with the env command. Make sure DISPLAY has been set to your X/window terminal's IP address. If not, you'll need to troubleshoot why it has not been setup. Normally, this would be in .profile but with an X/terminal, there are a number of ways to do this.

Re: TERM value for sam?

SAm usually comes up in ASCII mode when the DISPLAY variable is not recognized.

echo $DISPLAY to see what it is set to.

Re: TERM value for sam?

Now things are getting complicated. The Network Guys just upgraded our network to 100GB, and the gateway server doesn't respond (among other things), so the 700/RX doesn't come up. I have Hummingbird on a PC, and it shows DISPLAY=:0.0, and sam comes up in graphics mode.

I'll wait a while and see if the network settles down before I look at this one further.

Re: TERM value for sam?

I believe the 700/RX were strictly 10 Mb/sec. Your network folk may have to configure the port for your 700/RX to 10 Mb.
