I have a 735 series workstation that was, until a week ago, a client in an NIS system. I have no console and was hoping to boot it and telnet in but it refuses connection (you can ping the netowrk card).
My guess is that it is looking for the NIS Master as it is booting and hanging (or that it was broken in transit!).
I am trying to connect a PC to it over a serial cable to get a console session. I'm not having very much luck but if it is hanging that might be why.
Does anyone know of the correct settings for a terminal emulator to connect to one of these servers so I can reboot with a console screen?
Thanks,
Simon.

Re: Terminal Emulation Settings for a 735 series workstation
I am using Hyper Terminal but I would like to find the settings to use, i.e. stop bits, parity, emulation type etc.
Simon.

Re: Terminal Emulation Settings for a 735 series workstation
I'm using Reflection and that works fine.

SolutionThere are many times when a serial console is needed on workstations to set
stable store configurations. Yet this process seems to have remained somewhat
of a mystery. Reasons for needing a serial console:
1)No display on optional graphics console and there is no built-in graphics
port.
2)Just replaced the system board and it doesn't have a built-in graphics port.
3)No EVC to VGA adapter cable available to connect monitor to built-in port.
4)Unable to access console any other way.
RESOLUTION
Two methods for serial console.
Using a laptop PC as a serial console. Connect the laptop com1 port to the
workstation serial port1 using the cable from the console cable kit p/n 5063-
5950 (9-pin to 9-pin). Start up Reflections1 to make connection to com1 using
700/96 terminal emulation running 9600 baud8 bits no parity. Alternativly, some
CE's have reported success using Hyperterminal. It does not have the 700/96
emulation so it will work to do some simple tasks but willnot provide the
proper TERM type to applications that require an HP TERM.
Using a 700/96 or similar data terminal, connect the 700/96 comm port 1 to the
workstation serial port1 using the cable 24542g. Set the console terminal for
9600 baud 8 bits no parity. For the 700/96a quick way to do this is to restore
default configs, power off the terminal--hold the d key--power on--after a few
seconds--release the d key, you should see the message "default configs
restored-press return to continue". Make sure the terminal is in "Remote" mode,
ie., an asterisk in the remote box.
Parts Recommended: 24542g, 5063-5950

Re: Terminal Emulation Settings for a 735 series workstation
9600, 8 bits, no parity workde fine.
