the passwd enter take longer to get in

I have Redhat es3 could not boot up completely since it was waiting to startup Directory Server script. This time we were able to login and manually startup DS. The boot continued and bootup completely. However, the passwd takes longer (sometime longer than 60 seconds) to verify whenever we login through NIS or locally (like root). I dont' have that problem before DS startup. Of course, we have bunch of startup scripts after DS, but not sure what cause the problem. Any ideas? We did not change/update anything to the system. if you have not changed anything , it must be the network. Have you checked your DNS server response time ?

I would like to clarify my problem. I have no problem to telnet to the box. The problem is it takes longer after I typing my passwd to get the prompt. Look like it verified my passwd to something. It happens the same for root login. My /etc/nsswitch doesnot include ldap, only have files and nis. Not sure why the passwd takes so long.

Anh,

1) Typically slow login response is due to DNS. System attempts to look up the IP address to enter a name in the log.


2) If you are using NIS then response from NIS system could be to blame. If you are not using NIS then remove it from the /etc/nsswitch.conf file

3) Any extra commands being executed from the /etc/profile or users .profile could be to blame.

4) Overall system performance. If CPU is busy that will effect everything.

It turned out the port switch connect to gigabit had error. After correcting it, everything is fine.
