Thread not exiting after process shutdown using Java 1.3 on HPUX11.00

Help me please. New admin by default of last lay offs. I have applied all of the patches that HP recommends regarding using Java 1.3 on HPUX11.00. I also have the PHNE_25423 installed (whether or not its relevant - I saw it discussed in some of the forums with socket closing issues). What is happening is we have a process running (SFTP service connected to port defined in /etc/services) using java1.3 - when the stop command is initiated - it appears (logging, etc) that the process has been shutdown without any errors...but upon listening for the port - it is still active. By telneting to the port, it shuts down. Any ideas here?
