Timezone

When i install HP-UX 10.20 into HP9000 B180L machine, i select Singapore timezone. Automatically, it generates "SST-7" into /etc/TIMEZONE file or rather the OS uses "SST-7" as it's timezone.
The question is why not use "GMT+8" as most Personal Computer uses?
What is the difference between them?

Thanks

Re: Timezone

Some applications actually look for the locale i.e est-10 etc. So it is good to use that.

Re: Timezone

Unix does it a different way to windows. Unix takes the approach of how many hours do I add/subtract to get back to GMT, rather than how many hours do I need to add/subtract to get to local time.

Also, according to the /usr/lib/tztab file, there is a PST-8PDT entry which is Pacific Standard time and Daylight time for Malaysia or Singapore.
