Re: to extend file system

Hi Subodh,

Give the output of

lvdisplay -v /dev/lathprd/lvol13

bdf /dev/lathprd/lvol13

And also let me know how much u want to extend.

Cheers,

Give info about volume group as well:

Re: to extend file system

What is the exact lvextend command used.
Check out man lvcreate or man lcextend and you'll see a documented maximum of 65, There is a maximum of 65535 for an LV... not too many.

Each extend has a size defined by the volume group. For example 8mb or 32 mb.
How big is the extent size used?
Now calculate how many extends the desired target size woudl take. Less than 65K?

You can derive the extend size from lvdisplay. For example:

$ /usr/sbin/lvdisplay /dev/vg00/lvol6
--- Logical volumes ---
LV Name /dev/vg00/lvol6
VG Name /dev/vg00
LV Size (Mbytes) 10240
Allocated PE 320

So here the extend size must have been 10240/320 = 32 MB.

This can be confirmed with vgdisplay:
$ /usr/sbin/vgdisplay /dev/vg00
:
PE Size (Mbytes) 32
Free PE 2009

Please check the same commands for your setup.

>> through bdf i get free space as 511 gb for logical volume.

Not sure what you mean with that?
bdf with will report how much space is used for files within the Logical Volume. It tells us nothing about how much the LV can be grown. For that the allocated space is of value, not the free space.

Good luck!

Re: to extend file system

The errors says that the size which you have mentioned is less.

eg:
The LV size is 500 MB
You are trying to extend and give a size of 400 MB.

Since already the size is 500MB, the above error is thrown

You can check the present LV size by
# lvdisplay /dev/vgxx/lvolx
Check
LV Size (Mbytes) <<

You should always mention the total size to which you like to extend the LV

In the above example if you like to extend the LV by another 100 MB, then you should give the size of the LV as
500 + 100 MB = 600 MB

If you have already seen that the LV size if wat you wanted then you have to only

# umount /FS
# extendfs -F vxfs /dev/vgxx/rvolx
The above is a raw logical volume

If you are having online JFS then use

# fsadm

Re: to extend file system

hi,
i have to extending file system /dev/lathprd/lvol13 by 30gb,i done following steps.

(1)#vgdisplay
pe size :8
free pe:10841 so
free size:86728 mb(confirmation)

(2)#bdf
it is 96%
total size 536002560(kb)
used size 516194824(kb)
free size:18.890129089(gb)(current)

(3)vgdisplay -v /dev/lathprd
lvsize(mb):523440
current le:65430
allocated le:65430
4)umount.....
5)lvextend -L 554160 /dev/lathprd/lvol13

it show error as

lvextend:"logicalextendno"is bigger than max value allowed.

*can this can be solve by
lvextend -l .....cmd

*i also try through sam
it show me error as
"logicalextentno" must be value bet 1 and 65535.

kindly suggest the solution

Re: to extend file system

Have a look at the man pages, it mentions that max LE is 65535

-l le_number Increase the space allocated to the logical volume, specified in logical extents. le_number is a decimal value greater than the current number of logical extents, in the range 1 to 65535 (the implementation limit).

So you can not increase the LE then 65535. you have already created 65430.

Other option is to increase the PE size but for that you need to recreate the VG if it is older version of HPUX or use vgmodify if it is 11.23 or more.

Please note that on 11.23 you need to have some patches only then it is supported.

Re: to extend file system

Hi,

As Mridhul said, you cannot increase the LV size because of the PE Size * 65535 (the implementation limit) of lvcreate.

man lvcreate would give you info

In your situation, you can extend the LV to 524280 MB (65535*8). Otherwise, you have to recreate the VG with higher PE size or use vgmodify if your OS version supports it.

Re: to extend file system

subodh,

Be sure to READ and the answers provided earlier. They might just help.

554160/8 = 69270 which is larger than 65535. Bad planning. SOL.

Best regards,
Hein.

Re: to extend file system

Hi,

Just to alert that neither the PE Size can be changed nor the MAX_PE_PER_LV.

This is not possible even with the vgmodify command.

hi,

*as per discussion,in my case..
to increase the pe size,i have to recreate the vg.

*i have hp ux server of 11.11 ver
and it has 15 file system of large data, while recreating i will lose that much, and again i have to restore from tape.

*can u give me link to recreate vg
*is there is any other way to do this?

Yes.

>> *i have hp ux server of 11.11 ver

Yes, that is one of many ways to do it.

>> *can u give me link to recreate vg

$ man vgcreate, and 5 minutes careful reading is all you need.

>> *is there is any other way to do this?

Yes. Just create an additional logical volume. For example: /dev/lathprd/lvol13 to be mounted on /oracle/PRD_2.
If the name of the mounted is at all covering the intended use than it will be used to storage Oracle Production files.
Oracle doesn't care what local volume they are one, and they would end up on the same physical underlying storage anyway. Just add some extra data on the new volume instead of the existing ones, and possibly disable any autoextent on the existing files.
If you happen to have to please some A*%l Re~3*~1ve DBA which can not 'deal' with the alternative directories, then just provide some softlinks from /oracle/PRD/xxx.dbf to /oracle/PRD_2.

Enjoy,
Hein.
