Token Ring Connectivity

What is best-practice when connecting a token ring card to the network. Should the server be shutdown first, or will it function correctly just by plugging it in?

Personally, I like to start the server up with the connection to the network, regardless of the network, that way you get a feel of how it's going to work on the next reboot.
