tombstone files under /var/tombstones- can I delete these?

We have a lot of old tombstone configuration files under /var directory that are hogging up our disk space under /var. Would it be safe to delete the older tombstone files or do I need to keep all of them? Thanks

Hi,

If they are old and the problem that caused them is solved, you can delete them. You only need them if you are working with HP to debug a system crash.

Yes although if you are still seeing system crashes then you are throwing away what could be valuable diagnostic data.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

If you are not having any current hardware problems then it would be safe to remove most of them. A reasonable guide would be that the last few are of the same size. If this is the case, you can remove all but say the last 3, so
keep ts99, ts98 and ts97.

Thanks for your help. I looked at the files and they look like system configuration dump files. I'll keep the last few tombstones for backup and recovery purposes in case our server panics.

I'm attaching a doc on crash dump analysis, since it seems you're getting those.

No one's ever asked me for anything but ts99.

Re: tombstone files under /var/tombstones- can I delete these?

Hi,

It's a very good question because we were not sure when JP will ask some OLD files.
so my best advice is to take a backup of files and then delete them.
and atleast keep las one month file on system.

Thanks folks. This is the best forum for HP-UX I have ever found. Since I am pretty much the main HP-UX technician at work it really helps me a lot.
