Can anybody explain how the load factor displayed in top command o/p is calculated, also the values
of Memory (real, virtual, free) are different from
their actual values ( as I thouoght) can anybody elaborate on the meaning of real, virtual and free. Thanks in advance.

Re: top command

THe load is based on the average number of jobs in the run queue over 5, 10 and 15 minutes. My favourite metric actually. It doesn't tell me anything apart from the fact that there is a problem.

Theoretically real is physical RAM available to applications which isn't the same as real physical ram. Virtual RAM is your real RAM plus any swap you might have though I have a feeling that for top, virtual and swap are equivalent. And free RAM is how much you have left to fill up with more apache web servers.
