Transfering Files From HP-UX to HP-UX Best Practices

I need to transfer 3 - 6 files a day from 10 HP-UX boxes into one HP-UX box. I will be setting up a user on the destination box specific for this task. I'm wondering pro's and con's to doing the transfer via ftp vs. a cifs share.

Thanks

Re: Transfering Files From HP-UX to HP-UX Best Practices

Well 3-6 files a day, unless these are huge files, is not that much.
You could set up an auto ftp script to do this, or for something small I might just set up the files so you could rcp them across in a script.

Choice is yours...

Scott,

I would think that the bother of setting up a cifs share and any potential overhead of running cifs would lead you to just use ftp, perhaps automated as Rita suggests.

FYI: This will be 100% scripted, and we don't use remote commands.

ftp is by far the more robust method and can be easily scripted. CIFS shares require a lot of extra software and configs to get things going. And like NFS, it is a network-based filesystem, subject to all the instability that (sometimes minor) network problems can create. ftp is self-contained rather than integrated into the running filesystems. "server not responding" messages are going to cause problems for everything on the client system, whereas an ftp problem just affects the ftp program.

Sounds like ftp will be the way to go.

Thanks!
