....when I used to clean up logfiles (since my alerts already were scripted to email me) I went hand cleaned up the usual /tmp;/var/tmp;etc.etc...and then ran SAM to trim down files like cron.log,mail.log and syslog.log,etc...
Now, without SAM, the Routine tasks of Trim logfiles isn't there on 11.31. So I go to that "thing" on Windoze and I can't find trim logfiles there either. I can view, but no routine task to just trim.
I'm sure I'm missing it....could someone steer my Monday brain to where this old handy utility is...
Thanks,
Rita

I can't find it either.
It used to be under routine tasks as you say.
I just have a script that copies them off the nfs and does a > filename

Re: ?? Trim logfiles on 11.31 - smh ??
Yeppers....nothing.
I'm waiting for someone to tell me I have go in and configure all this stuff - my response - and nope.
This is really sad to me, that a company I have so respected is making these kind of decisions or putting out products in this fashion.
They removed the gui on Data Protector on the Itanium platform. Fixed that for us, but guess I'll have to write silly trim scripts for this...argh..
Itanium is powerful - Virtual Machines is a neat. But trying to run HPUX from Windows is a sad commentary on some HP Mgmt decision making. Shame!! Shame !!
Oh well....hoping I'm just missing something simple. Would feel better if it was blonde thing ya know...

I couldn't agree more. That's why we used to have Interex - so we had a voice. They took care of that, though, didn't they?

Re: ?? Trim logfiles on 11.31 - smh ??
Not windows per se but java scripts in a browser. SMH "works" with firefox running on HP-UX. I only had problems with "filter" for log viewing. I got some XML stuff.
>without SAM, the Routine tasks of Trim logfiles isn't there on 11.31.
I couldn't find it either.
I did look at SAM and SAM log and found that it seems that SAM did this directly and didn't invoke a script in /usr/sam/lbin/.

Re: ?? Trim logfiles on 11.31 - smh ??
Guess with three others seeing what I'm seeing-that makes it official. On 11.31 there is no "trim" utility for logfiles.
Thanks for keeping me on the straight road with the java statement. Yeah, we can bring up SMH on our boxes too, but if it can't do EVERYTHING that SAM could do....then there is no increase in benefit. Cute java screen with some nice graphics for nPar - but that is it. I don't look to HPUX boxes for just for pretty pictures.
I want good handy solid utilities - period.
Oh well...off my soap box. There is no such thing anymore as real service - even from "service providers". Now that term is truly becoming an oxymoron.
Shame on you HP!...shame,shame,shame.
Regards to ALL - and this thread will be closed with points assigned!

Have you contacted to the Response Center and asked that SMH be enhanced to add this "trim" feature? (Mention that SAM had it.)

Re: ?? Trim logfiles on 11.31 - smh ??
A potential useful graphical tool like the ACU is not ported, but instead SMH is.
In several areas I think there is less functionality than in old SAM (not only trim files - look for add swap space and tell me if you find it).
Nevertheless I found this:
"...For HP-UX, there is no longer a user guide so please refer to the HP SMH online help ..."
http://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=SysMgmtWeb
My way to increase knowledge is most of the times reading the manuals - I currently don't have a 11.31 system to read the online help!
OK, the text based SMH is not that bad, but without documentation ...?
To be fair let me mention the SMH based integration of hp-ux servers into HP SIM for all who want to do this.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Sorry I can't assign points, since I sort of closed this thread - but always appreciate your comments.
In several areas I think there is less functionality than in old SAM (not only trim files - look for add swap space and tell me if you find it).
>>>>>Yeah, discovered this the other day when I went to add some swap. I had to remember how to use the swapon command and put it manually into the /etc/fstab. Guess it's the proverbial 3 steps back when we get a pretty graphical screen.
OK, the text based SMH is not that bad, but without documentation ...?
>>>>Have you tried to search on it. It did a search for 'trim' - zippo. Search for "log(s)" not any better. I am truly not impressed with this cutsie product.
To be fair let me mention the SMH based integration of hp-ux servers into HP SIM for all who want to do this.
>>>>Do you know where SIMM came from. I think it was some old PC mgmt software, maybe from Compaq. I took a 3 or 4 day class on it and felt I just wasted my time horribly with this. They are forcing you to use this product if you have ISEE (which we do...). I hate sounding so negative - but who is steering the ship where HPUX is concerned. Somebody wake up the captain - PLEASE...

Re: ?? Trim logfiles on 11.31 - smh ??
Torsten,
Found swap. It's under disks and then click on a tab called 'page space'.
Of course I haven't noticed it usable for virtual machines to set up swap. That I've had to do by hand!!
Will re-open and assign some points.

I see this but I found a PDF of a Feb 2008 user's guide.
I looked at a link above in "System Management Homepage Install Guide":
http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/agents/documentation.html
Followed the "Manuals - HP System Management Homepage Software" link.
Got out my HP Passport to follow the "Manuals" link. And under there was the PDF: System Management Homepage User Guide
>My way to increase knowledge is most of the times reading the manuals - I currently don't have a 11.31 system to read the online help!
If it was available on your 11.23? system would your use it?

Re: ?? Trim logfiles on 11.31 - smh ??
Whilst I'd agree that in some areas SMH is a step backward, I think we have to think who its aimed at... and I'm afraid its not us - the product for me is aimed at the operators who have 100s of systems to worry about and generally don't have the time or the skills to touch the command line - these operators may well have to manage many x86 systems as well, so if they can do it all from the same interface then thats an advantage.
We admins are generally expected to automate, and if I was looking at your specific problem I'd probbaly look at using something like logrotate:
http://hpux.connect.org.uk/hppd/hpux/Sysadmin/logrotate-2.5/
Unfortunately this looks like one of those packages that's no longer maintained by the porting and archive center, and I wonder if newer versions of logrotate have become very linux dependent (if you look at newer versions here: http://packages.debian.org/source/sid/logrotate you'll see some pretty Linux specific dependencies), although I also note recent versions for Solaris so it must be possible to resolve these dependencies
Others have successfully compiled logrotate for newer versions of HP-UX - see here for an example:
